In defense of … daytime television.
There is no greater pinnacle of our society than that of daytime television. The backstabbing, the drama, the histrionic spectacles of emotion highlight the intricacies of our interpersonal relationships. What would the pregnant mothers eating their third watermelon, the kids with mono on sick leave, and the folks in those horrible raisin ranches waiting out the end of their days do without it? If we take away daytime television, where would we find our boredom panacea? Surely not in expanding our minds by reading great literature of the ages, charitable work, or fortifying our bodies with exercise. Surely not in taking up a musical instrument, creating art, or listening to opera. No, next time I’m bored at one in the afternoon, I’m going to flip on the television and watch Days of Our Lives.
